چکیده

We present an approach to construct position-sensitive silicon detectors with an integrated cooling circuit. Tests on samples demonstrate that a very modest liquid flow very effectively cool the devices up to a power dissipation of over 10 W/cm. The liquid flow is found to have a negligible impact on the mechanical performance. A finite-element simulation predicts the cooling performance to an accuracy of approximately 10 %.

Considerations for the Next Compton Telescope Mission

A high resolution Compton telescope has been identified by the Gamma Ray Astronomy Program Working Group (GRAPWG) as the highest priority major mission in gamma ray astrophysics following GLAST. This mission should provide 25-100 times improved sensitivity, relative to CGRO and INTEGRAL, for MeV gamma ray lines. It must have good performance for narrow and broad lines and for discrete and diffu...

Development and applications of position-sensitive solid-state gamma ray detectors

The development of high -resolution position-sensitive, solid-state detectors will enable gamma ray detectors with improved sensitivity and imaging capabilities. The gamma ray astrophysics group at NRL has been developing germanium strip detectors for several years. We have shown that three-dimensional locations for gamma ray interactions can be determined with sub-millimeter accuracy, and have...

Performance of the Silicon Detectors for the CMS Barrel Tracker

The Compact Muon Solenoid is a detector designed for the Large Hadron Collider. High particle rates combined with a magnetic field of 4 T make particle tracking a challenge. The baseline is to use silicon pixel and microstrip detectors and microstrip gas chambers. This talk focuses on the barrel part of the silicon tracker. It is made of 816 modules (368 single-sided and 448 double-sided) arran...

The LHCb Upgrade from 1 to 40 MHz readout

The LHCb experiment at the LHC will upgrade its detector to take data at luminosities of above 1033 cm−2s−1 from 2018 onwards. The fully upgraded detector will use a new front-end electronics to readout collision events at 40MHz. A new fully software based trigger will be implemented and will increase the trigger efficiencies, specially in the hadronic decay channels. The silicon vertex detecto...

Advances in position-sensitive photodetectors for PET applications

This paper presents a brief review of the use of position-sensitive detectors in positron emission tomography (PET) together with an overview of the near-future perspectives. Special attention is given to the development of a new class of magnetic field-compatible solid state photodetectors, the so-called silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). & 2009 Elsevier B.V.
